Enhancing CD4 Count
Apr 19, 2009

I was diagnosed with HIV in 2006 with a CD4 count of 12 and not aware of my HIV Load. However, I was treated with Atripla for 2 years with a CD4 count of 150 and its been at that level for 2 years with a undetectable viral load for those 2 years. My doc is baffled at how to work at getting my CD4 count to go up. any suggestions?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Unfortunately, the lower your CD4 count when you start, the longer it can take for your CD4 count to increase. We have seen people with undetectable viral load, on stable HIV treatment, continue to increase their CD4 count even after 2 years. Other strategies such as adding another HIV medication to a successful regimen, has yielded mixed results, in that, some people did experience a CD4 count increase, but many didn't.
