Does Viral Load Fluctuate
Mar 22, 2009

Hello Dr. Holodniy. I was diagnosed last December when my partner of 10+ years was diagnosed with AIDS. My First Labs in December has a VL of 500 and cd4 of 374.

As of my last lab, my cd4 count fell to 363, but rose 1% to 25%. My VL increased to 1000.

I am currently not on meds, and am aware cd4 can fluctuate. Is that true with Viral Load as well, or is it normally an upward trend until meds are started? Thank you.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Yes, viral load can fluctuate, both because of assay variability and medical conditions such as acute infections, immunizations, among others. We usually ascribe variation up to 3 fold (3 times up or down) as being just assay variability.
