Different Virus

Jan 11, 2009

Hi Doc

I would like to inquire about the following: There are to different types of the virus - one found in Africa and one in the rest of the world - does the arv's work well on both ? Also when developming new drugs do they ensure that it is tested on both versions of the virus?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

There are many strains of HIV circulating throughout the world. Yes, new drugs are tested against all of these various type strains in the laboratory during development, and they have been shown to work just as well in people across various geographic regions.
