Curious?
Dec 31, 2008

Hello Dr. McGowan, I have emailed to you before and you were VERY helpful in answering my questions thank you.

I have another question for my own educational purposes, why is it that for an HIV test fastening is not required, unlike for other blood tests?

Response from Dr. McGowan

Thank you for the compliment!

Fasting is only required when food could interfere with what you are testing...such as blood sugar or lipids (fat and cholesterol content of the blood). HIV tests measure antibody levels which are the same in the fed or unfed state.
