how could one tell if HIV virus gone?
Nov 30, 2008

Are there any lab tests to know definately if HIV virus totally gone--has this ever happened?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

The one patient that has been discussed in the news from Berlin, appears to have cleared the infection. This however, is after chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant from a special donor who has cells that are immune to HIV infection. Very sophisticated molecular tests are required to determine if blood cells and cells from other organs no longer have the HIV virus in them.
