Unusual results
Nov 15, 2008

I am a 40 yr old man at risk and with symptoms and signs of infecion including CD 4 count of 423/mm cube.I an on treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis with my wife and three daughters. The problem is we are HIV antibody negative. My viral culture however was positive for recerse transcriptase,What can i do?I am from Nigeria where all subtypes M,N,O viruses are found.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I assume you mean you had some kind of a HIV culture test which detected reverse transcriptase activity. This seems unusual that the doctor would culture your blood for HIV. I would be curious to know what kind of culture test was done and what did the doctor tell you the results meant?
