Qualitative Testing result
Sep 21, 2008

Hi, I just wanted to clarify something, I recently had an HIV Qualitative test done after 6 months of a situation of possible risk, in spanish the test is called HIV Ag/Ab, at least that`s what the results sheet said, prob same in english it came out as 0.09 non reactive, I got told at the clinic that I needed to get one more done in 6 more months to be a 100% sure, is that correct or really necesary? Also I just wanted to know what is it that this test looks for? In the results, in the reference value it tells you that anything below 1.0 its non reactive and anything equal to or above 1.0 its reactive, and from my result being 0.09 I think its quite close to the limit of the reactive right? or am I just misunderstanding? I feel calm now but just been left with a bit of curiosity. Hope you can help? Thank you.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Not knowing the test name, but from your description, it appears the test is looking at HIV antibodies and antigen (a protein from the virus). The interpretation from that result is that it is nonreactive. The usual procedure is to get another test done after about 6 months.
