Worried
Aug 31, 2008

Hi, I have been worried sick since i had a one night sexual encounter 13th January 2008.I tested with TSTD.ORG for a STD panel consisting of several STD'S on May 1st 2008.I have been reading that 6 months is the window period but this company actually said that there window period for a healthy adult is 3 months.I have been having alot of body and joint aches, burning of my tongue and i am so worried if my tests are accurate. They said my HIV and other STD tests results at 3 months is very accurate...Do you agree?? Please help as i really need to know if my HIV tests at 12 weeks is conclusive?? Thank you!!

Response from Dr. McGowan

It is very unlikely that a person infected with HIV would not have developed antibodies (that is have a positive test) by 3 months after exposure. Current Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines do not recommend further testing beyond 3 months (as long as there has not been another interim possible exposure).
