If HIV lives in the gut is there any way to measure it
Aug 31, 2008
Dear Doctor Holodniy
I have read that only 2% of HIV lives in the blood, the reaminder resiging in our lymph nodes, gut, brain, testicles etc.
The majority I believe lives in the gut and judging by the rumbling in my stomach since I was infected this makes sense.
Given this, do you know why at the moment there doesn't seem to be any measurement of HIV in the gut?
Are there any gut HIV measurement techniques in the pipeline?
Thanks for your help and best wishes
Response from Dr. Holodniy
It can be measured, but is not practical, given the need for invasive procedures to acquire tissue by endoscopy.
