VIral Load over 10 Million
Jul 5, 2008

My nephew was recently diagnosed with Aids - however a year ago he did not even test HIV Positive. At the time of his test his viral load was over 10 million. He has lost muscle and is very ill. Can Aids be reversed to HIV positive? What is is life expectancY?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

You don't indicate what the CD4 count and percent is. Assuming it is < 200 and/or < 14% (which is the definition of AIDS), but if this is true a new infection within the last year, then the clinical situation is much better than if this were long standing HIV infection which had progressed to AIDS. AIDS can be reversed with HIV treatment, which will control HIV replication and increase the CD4 count and help restore the damaged immune system. Life expectancy is dependent on many factors including age, underlying other medical conditions, addiction disorders, among others.
