Toxicity from meds
May 17, 2008

I am on Truvada, Reyataz, and Norvir and started meds nearly two months ago. My current counts are 461 CD4(up from 353), non-detectable(was 48K) and CD4 percent is currently 27% (unchanged since starting meds). Given my med regiman and duration so far on meds, I would like to know about toxicity with meds? Is there a time frame when one becomes toxic because of meds? What are the signs of toxicity from meds? Thanks.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

If you have not had any problems up to this point, you have survived the first major stress test, as many of the acute side effects would have manifested themselves already. Longer term, there could be the possibility of some kidney problems (mostly from tenofovir) or metabolic complications such as lipid disorders or diabetes. These do not occur with everybody, but could develop within the first year of treatment.
