| Effect of Valtrex? Jan 12, 2008 I am 40 years old became hiv pos in June 07. My initial VL during the acute phase was over 1 million. By August labs were: VL 31,200 cd4 761, 34%. In September my labs were: VL 14,700 cd4 617, 39%. In November I went on Valtrex 500mg twice per day to suppress herpes outbreaks. In December by labs were: VL 2,000 cd4 805, 37%. Do you think the Valtrex is also suppressing HIV in my system now? If this is true then I am happy to continue on the Valtrex to hopefully extend the time period before I start HIV meds. |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
It may be indirectly. Valtrex has no activity against HIV. However, recurrent herpes outbreaks can result in t cell activation which can increase HIV replication and therefore viral load levels. | |||||||||
