3 tests say HIV+, now clinicians doubting lab
Dec 3, 2007
I was tested as positive at my local clinic and this was confirmed by a second test a couple of weeks ago at the same clinic. The results sheet read:
HIV (DETECTED) HIV 1&2 Antigen/Antibody (DETECTED) HIV 1&2 - Confirmation EIA (DETECTED) HIV 1&2 Line Assay (HIV 1 DETECTED) HIV anti-sgp120 (DETECTED) HIV anti-gp41 (DETECTED) HIV anti-p24 (BORDERLINE) HIV anti-p31 (not detected) HIV anti p17 (not detected) HIV anti-sgp105 (not detected) HIV anti-gp36 (not detected)
My results were then sent to a different lab out of the area to confirm that there had been no clinical error (and no labelling mix-ups etc). I was also tested positive there.
They then took some more blood to do a Viral Load count- but my viral load is undetectable.
Given my past and my risks of exposure before the test (practically zero,I'm only 17 never having had a blood transfusion, known anyone with HIV, never had unprotected sex [other than with current boyfriend who has repeatedly tested negative], never injected anything etc)- everyone at the clinic was really shocked that they were even positive in the first place.
Now these have come back undetectable, they've advised me to go and get tested elsewhere in a clinic that uses different laboratories to get a 'second clinical opinion'.
What are the chances that these were just false positives initially, and am I wrong to have any hopes of a negative result at this different clinic?
Also how is it that these factual medical results can all contradict eachother if I go to another clinic?
Also, does the fact that

I think you need to retest in about 4-6 weeks after this last test to see whether there are changes on the western blot.
