What does CD4% mean and what is its significance? I know a percent is a ratio but what is a the ratio here and why is it important to know? What use is the CD4%?
| Response from Dr. Holodniy
CD4% is the percentage of lymphocytes that are CD4+. although the CD4% is the fraction of CD4 cells present, the CD4% is not a ratio per se. You may be referring to the CD4/CD8 ratio, which is a fraction that is calculated by dividing the CD4 number (not percent) by the CD8 number. The CD4% is a useful number to follow in addtion to the CD4 absolute count because it tends to be a more stable number over time, and is not subject to the changes one can see in the CD4 count.
