| CMV Jun 23, 2007 hello, I was diagnosed with HIV in december, and got scarred reading about CMV and retinitis. Is there something I can do to avoid CMV? Is there a test like for Hep C? Thanks, |

Most people are exposed to CMV as small children and become infected at that point. CMV antibodies would like be positive in you. CMV is a virus in the herpes family, and like these other viruses reside in the body in a dormant state, unless the immune system is severely weakened because of organ transplant, chemotherapy, or AIDS, among other causes. The most important thing for people with HIV is to maintain their CD4 count. CMV disease usually develops in those people whose CD4 count is < 50. | |||
