CD4, CD8 and viral load blood test
Sep 24, 2006
Three months ago I was diagnosed HIV positive. I just got the blood test results for CD4, CD8 and Viral Load. I would like to understand the results before visiting my doctor. According to the blood test report this is what I got: CD4 13%, CD8 20%, Viral Load 13,100. Does it mean I need to start treatment? Thanks a lot.

Possibly. You don't indicate what your absolute CD4 count is. Given a CD4% of 13% it is likely your CD4 count is < 300. Although your viral load is on the low to moderate side, you CD4 count percent indicates pretty significant immune system damage. A CD4 count of < 200 or < 14% implies an AIDS diagnosis, which puts people at greater risk for developing opportunistic infections. I would recommend treatment.
