Questioning HIV+ Test
Jul 16, 2006

I was told in 2000 that I was HIV positive. However at that time the physicians I saw questioned the results, undetectable viral load, excellent T-cell count, all labs "absolutely normal". I had a physician tell me I was negative and another say, we have ruled out HIV-2 and are going to move ahead with treating you for HIV-1. I see my physician 1x per year and ever year it is the same - labs absolutely normal. I just had a visit and was asked to come back in for a new HIV test, the test that was ran in the lab at the clinc I go to would not grow a positive HIV culture. The new tests are being sent to the CDC for testing. (I feel like I am living 2000 all over again!) Are there any reasons a test would be negative at one lab and positive at another? Can you have some or patial HIV antibodies? Any reason for tests that seem to be so different? I know it is hard not knowing 100% of the history, but my physician is out of the country and I need some explaination and everyone at my clinc is clueless. I feel I go to a top notch clinc, so I do not question their expertise, but should I? Thanks!

You do not indicate what the results of the screening EIA and confirmatory western blot test were.

Previous

Next
