| syphilis biopsy? Feb 12, 2006 Is syphilis rash itchy? Is there a biopsy to determine if rash is due to syphilis? Can sysphilis be spread through casual contact. (ie., saliva as opposed to blood to blood or mucosa). Can it be spread through needlestick? |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
Possibly, but unlikely itchy. Depending on the stage of disease, organisms could be present in skin and therefore seen by biopsy and spread by contact. It is theoritically possible that syphilis could be spread by needlestick because it can be detected in the blood of people with active infection. | |||||||||
