converting my lab work
Dec 4, 2005

Dr. I've looked and not seen anything like my question. I'm newly infected and trying to understand what I've been told. I have no insurance thus no doctor to ask this ? too. The lab came back saying total cd3 77 Positive cd4 34 poistive cd8 41 and cd4/cd8 ration .83. with 37/38 normals >1.00 .. i understand the lanuage of Tcell 600 and VL 5000 how do I convert what this and other test say to this I guess what is called absolute number. Thank you so much!

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I believe those numbers are percentages, as a CD4 percent of 34% would fit with an absolute count of 600. These numbers represent the percent of blood lymphocytes that are t cells (CD3), helper cells (CD4) and suppressor/cytotoxic t cells (CD8). You can roughly convert them to an absolute number if you have the absolute or total lymphocyte count.
