Where are the Medicines with Less Side Effects?

Jun 25, 2005

We keep hearing about new HIV medicines with less side effects, but what are they?

Viread? Fine for some, but terrible for others, just like all the other drugs.

Reyataz? Lexiva?

All the approved HIV drugs are antivirals, which work by attacking processes that happen in the healthy cell as well as the virus.

This can never lead to a cure.

Why aren't HIV clinicians crying out for increased research into topics such as methods for decreasing the cell-death of healthy CD4s and immune-based therapies to reduce the autoimmune responses to HIV infection?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Things overall are much better than where we were in 1985, 1990, or 1995, etc. Pharma companies continue to develop more drugs against conventional targets and new targets as well. Most of the drugs do come at some price with respect to toxicity. But this is no different than drugs used to treat any other chronic illness like hypertension or diabetes all of which have toxicities much like HIV drugs and are used to treat these illnesses which are also not curable either.
