Considering treatment currently my HCV QN by bDNA is 830593 IU/ml. Is this high? Is this number used to predict the efficacy of treatment. Best, RC

Response from Dr. Holodniy

That HCV viral load would be considered low. Most patients have HCV viral loads in the millions. The pretreatment copy number does not necessarily predict treatment success. However the reduction after 12 weeks of treatment (I.e. a 2 log or 100 fold drop) is considered the benchmark for predicting treatment success. The genotype of the virus also plays a factor. Success is more likely with genotype 2 or 3 as opposed to genotype 1.
