Response from Dr. Holodniy
In general HCV viral loads are about 10-20 times higher than HIV viral in the blood. Most people have a viral load > 1 million copies/mL. One commercial HCV test only goes up to 750,000 copies. Thus, anybody with a viral load greater than that number the result will only say > 750,000. For a while it was thought not to be important to know the exact HCV viral load number. When contemplating treatment, it does become important to know the number as we look for a 2 log (100 time reduction) in viral load after 12 weeks of treatment to determine if treatment is being effective. | |||||||||
