Radiation treatment of enlarged parotid glands
Jan 29, 2005
I am an HIV+ male who has facial lipodistrophy which has been addressed by NU-Fill injections. Subsequent to the treatment, the parotid glands on both sides of my face have become enlarged. I have had a cat-scan and gallium scan neither of which indicated cysts in the glands. I have heard, however, that this condition can be treated with "modulated radiation therapy". Do you know anything about this and can you direct me to any location that might be employing this treatment?

Yes, there is a small body of literature that has reported resolution or at least a decline in swelling of parotid glands with low dose radiation. You dont indicate at what stage of HIV disease you are at, because other infectious and noninfectious causes should be ruled out before such treatment is attempted. I can't refer you to a specific place, but a local radiation oncologist or radiologist might be able to help you.
