| Catching menengitis from someone who just had a vacination Apr 16, 2004 my husband (hiv neg.) recently had vacinations for menengitis and typhus for a trip to india. He was slightly ill for 3 days after the vacinations. Now after 2 days since he left, I am feeling ill with sore throat and headache. Someone told me that it is possible for someone to catch the disease from a person who just had a vacination for the disease. I am hiv positive. Is this true? could I have caught menegitis? |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
I assume he received a japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine, which is INactivated (killed) and probably typhoid vaccine. If he got the oral typhoid vaccine, that is live, but the shot is killed. Typhoid causes a diarrheal illness. You cannot get meningitis from the JE vaccine, but it probably explains the symptoms he was having, which is a common side effect of that vaccine. | |||||||||
