Feb 8, 2004 sir, i am an engineer working on a project related to aids involving tech based ideas.i would like to know that is it possible that we may device a handy set to instantly indicate whether a person is hiv+ or not. such a device would potentially prevent the uneducated masses across the world from indulging in unsafe sex. what would be the major hurdle in making such a device. do reply.thanking you. |

There are HIV antibody tests that can detect the presence of antibodies in as little as three minutes. It seems that an "instant" test to detect or quantitate the virus is farther off. It either requires detection, and amplification of the viral RNA, detection of HIV proteins, which requires time, or some strategy to determine the NMR signal of an HIV viral particle, which could give you the answer instantaneously. | |||||||||
