A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS
Mar 15, 2001

Dr. Mark, Would a negative Eliza and undectable viral load at 8 weeks after the exposure rule out HIV infection? And, on a personal opinion note: Do you think we may be on the verge of the PCR playing a bigger role in HIV diagnosis? It seems that more and more labs are successfully performing this test, and more medical literature is pointing towards the PCR's effectiveness in diagnosis. Thanks for all the time and energy you're putting into this forum!

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Probably, with all the caveats about unapproved uses of viral load testing for diagnosis. It already is playing a bigger role in blood banking to exclude contaminated blood units from the blood supply.
