|low cd4 and low VL
Nov 16, 2003
Hi, my father has HIV, the first test (15 th, september 2003): Cd4=29, VL=411 (no meds for hiv in that time).. Can you tell me if that was normal? Could be some mistake? (he was in hospital with TB in that time) now is better and since 1st november he began with 3tc complex + efavirenz, but I can not undestand how can he have that low cd4 but low VL too?? Thank you very much from Argentina.

First, was the CD4 of 29, the percentage or the absolute count of CD4 cells. It would be somewhat unusual to have an absolute CD4 count of 29 and that low of a viral load, particularly in the presence of TB. A repeat count after treatment started will probably reveal and undetectable viral load. The CD4 percentage and absolute count should be elevated compared to the pretreatment levels.
