How do they detect and subtype a specific HIV infection? Aug 10, 2003 How do they group and subtype a specific HIV viral infection? Presumably this method must also be able to detect the virus, whatever subtype it belongs to? Can you please explain a bit of how the process works? Thanks. |

 Subtyping HIV-1 is usually performed in research laboratories using fairly sophisticated molecular biology techniques. It involves DNA sequencing the HIV envelop, and polymerase genes primarily, and then comparing those sequences to known other subtypes of HIV-1. | ||||||||
