|Nucleic acid testing

Dr. Holodniy, You mentioned nucleic acid testing in an answer a few months ago. How sensitive are PCR based nucleic acid tests in detecting all strains of the HIV 1 virus...do all subtypes leave a trace of nucleic acid that would be detected? Is nucleic acid testing different from VL testing such as by Roche Monitor 1.5 or bDNA?
| Response from Dr. Holodniy
Viral load testing is essentially a form of Nucleic acid testing (NAT), since these tests detect and quantify the RNA or nucleic acid sequence of the virus.
