| Long term outlook May 25, 2003 Dr., Do YOU have any reason to believe that a cure/vaccine will be made available to those who are currently infected with HIV? Even for those who have the best response to treatment and live for decades? Or are we just 'prolonging the inevitable'? Obviously I am looking for your individual thoughts based on your experience. Thank you for you honest answer in advance. |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
Cure is difficult to imagine, since we have not made much progress in many other viral illnesses that we can be chronically infected with. A therapeutic vaccine (one given to those already infected to enhance the immune system) seems possible. Whereas a truly effective preventative vaccine (given to those who are uninfected to prevent them from getting infected) seems longer off in the future. | |||||||||
