cd4 percentage and count mismatch!
Mar 15, 2003

HI, My cd4 count results have always been confusing and tend to do what ever they like. Ranging from 209 to 600 in any order. BUT my cd4 Percentage has remain around 17 percent over the last 1.5 years. I have read that a result of below 20 percent is equal to a result of 200 cd4 cells. But my figures do not match! So which figure do i listen to? One says I am doing well (count), the other says i am doing not too well (percentage). I am not on any treatment, but may have had pcp once (but cd4 count was too high to confirm it), and have been positive for 5 years. I hope you can sort out this confusion. Cheers

Response from Dr. Holodniy

A good rule of thumb is that a CD4 count of 200 is around a percentage of 14%. So your percentage of 17% would have you roughly in the 250-300 cell range.
