WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIV 1 AND 2??
HOW DO I KNOW IF THE RESULT IS POSITIVE FOR HIV 2 AND REQUIRES FURTHER WORKUP? (WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN TEST RESULTS?)
Response from Dr. Holodniy
HIV 1 and 2 are different retroviruses. They have different disease courses (HIV 2 is a much slower infection in terms of progression). Some antibody tests screen for both infections. Confirmation of HIV2 infection requires a specific HIV2 western blot be performed.
