From Italy
Mar 10, 2002

Dear doctors,I'm a 29 years old italian male who discovered on last december to have an HIV infection. My lab test, made on last mounth, responced that I had 354 CD4 and my VL was 230000. My doctor said that I have to start therapy very soon and offered me to partecipated to a clinical trial named MOCHA that is an HAART therapy with micofenolato mofetil. Now I have 2 questions: 1)Can stress modify the count of CD4 and the VL? How much? 2)I haven't any disease,it's correct to start a therapy with so many collateral effect? Thank you very much and excuse me for my ugly english.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

We have anecdotal evidence that suggests stress can affect CD4 counts. There haven't been alot of studies that have quantified the change in CD4 and degree of stress. Given your CD4 count and viral load level, I would recommend starting therapy. MH
