Viaral load high
Feb 10, 2002

My husband is an African from Nairobi. He has been in the U.S. for three years and now tested + on the Elisa. He was given an MMR and dT (which he shows he was already immune to)and then they drew his blood for the Elisa. He is on coumadin. We had his blood redrawn and his VDRL now tested +(in 1999 it was neg). His toxoplasmosis IgG is 2.11, his lab indicates he is susceptible to primary infection. CD4 ABS is 527,CD8 ABS 679,CD3 ABS 1274, Help support ratio 0.78, cd4= 31, CD8= 40, viral load 17,527, Log10 RNA=4.24.My question is, could those injections cause his viral load to be high and why is he now VDRL +. My VDRL is neg and I do not have my hiv results back yet. We have not had any relationships outside of our marraige.Could the coumadin have altered any of these results? Does this indicate he is deffinately hiv +?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Immunizations can certainly cause a transient increase in HIV viral load. There have been numerous reports of false positive VDRL tests in people with HIV infection. A VDRL test is a screening test for syphilis. A more definitive or confirmatory test such as a MHA-TP or FTA needs to be done to confirm the diagnosis.
