PLEASE HELP!! 2-1/2 Months of pure hell.
Jan 22, 2002

Thank you for taking the time to read my posting! I have read almost all of the postings in this forum and I think you guys do a great job! Here is my question. I had a particularly high risk exposure 2-1/2 months ago. Since that time I have been experiencing an enourmous amount of anxiety...can't sleep, can't eat, have difficulty getting through the day. Have had some symptoms which may be related to ARS i.e. unexplained rash over most of my body that lasted about 10 days. No other symptoms.

When I try and call my doctor all I get is his nurse who doesn't seem to be able to do anything and seems as though I am bothering her. Anyway, I had a DNA by PCR at 14 days weeks, along with a series of STD, CBC and some other things I don't understand. All negative/normal. I had another DNA by PCR test done at 28 days, also negative. I had an ELISA test at 49 days, negative. Taking all of the into consideration what does it mean and where do I go from here. Please Help!

Response from Dr. Little

Based upon the test results you describe, it does not sound to me like you are HIV infected. I cannot obviously be certain without knowing a more complete history and laboratory test results, but a negative PCR at 28 days (assuming you were not taking any antiretroviral medications) and an HIV ELISA at 49 are pretty strong evidence that you are negative. As always, if you are still very anxious, you could seek out repeat HIV ELISA testing at 3 and 6 months.
