CD4 count/Viral Load
Jan 4, 2002

Hello Dr Holodniy,

My question is regarding CD4 cell count and viral load results. My first lab results were: CD4=283, VL=750,000. Second lab results were: CD4=423, VL=2600. Third lab results were: CD4=330, VL=76. My concern is the drop in CD4 cells from the 2nd lab to the 3rd lab. Although my VL continued to drop, my CD4 count also dropped instead of increasing? Is this something I should be concerned with? My Dr. told me this was a "trend" with CD4 counts and that I shouldn't worry since my VL was continuing to decrease. I have been on Trizivir (abacavir + lamivudine + zidovudine) since Aug. 15th, 2001. Also, do you have any comments, positive or negative, about this particular medication?

Have a Great New Year & Thanks very much, Mike

Response from Dr. Holodniy

You have had a great viral load response. Trizivir is great and appropriate for many patients. I would like to know about your CD4 percentage and how that changed. The percent is usually a more stable number. Absolute CD4 counts can fluctuate more than the percent. I would not be concerned at this point and wait to make any conclusions until you get your next set of numbers (CD4 number and percent) MH
