CD4 cell

Feb 13, 2011

What CD4 cell? Are they part of white blood cell? Why do HIV attack CD4 cell only?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Yes, they are a white blood cell and part of the lymphocyte family. HIV attacks CD4 cells in particular because the outside of an HIV virus can lock onto a CD4 receptor to gain entry into the cell, and many other kinds of white blood cells don't have this receptor and so are not infected.

Will a cure exist in our life time?
