Pregnancy and Purbac DS
Apr 4, 2010
I'm 4months pregnant and about to start meds for ARVs for the 1st time. My doc said he has prescribed meds that''ll reduce my current VL (9800) to " undetectable" asap. He has prescribed Purbac Double Strength in the meantime to help avoid infection (specifically) pneumonia. I only picked up the prescription today & according to the pamplet, Purbac should not be administered to pregnant women.I've googled it as well and it says the same thing. Will this medication affect my baby?

Current national HIV guidelines do recommend trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (active ingredients in Purbac) for prevention or treatment of opportunistic infections such as pneumocystis pneumonia, even during pregnancy. Although there are some theoretical concerns regarding fetal abnormalities that might develop during the first trimester with these antibiotics, the benefits outweigh the negatives. Since you are into your second trimester, taking this medication is likely to be safe. You may want to have another conversation with your doctor about your concerns.
