Huge Spike In Viral Load
Jun 6, 2009
Six months ago my partners labs were cd4 about 850 vl about 15000. Labs a few days ago are cd4 about 800 vl is over a million. He is not on meds. His doctor says not to worry till his next set of labs in 3 months and that he maybe had a cold or something. I am trying to find out what could have potentially caused such a large jump. With such a large increase in VL i cant help but be concerned. Any thoughts or suggested reading? thanks!

Response from Dr. Holodniy

His doctor's reaction is likely because of his normal CD4 count. That is clearly quite a jump in viral load and would not be the normal course of things or as a result of assay variability. The first reason is lab error or sample mixup. Other causes could be an ongoing infection in him, or a recent immunization, both of which can cause the viral load to increase signficantly.
