You kindly replies to my question: - How long on a drug keep ivf below 50? May 3, 2008

As in heading.

My wife has been prescribed trizivar for two weeks to get down from 7000 viral load to below 50. How long will this be effective and what then to keep her down to that level?

You said that the medicine needs to be taken daily to keep the load below 50.

Is there a regime that involves a similar level of protection (a)for my wife by allowing the viral load to rise above 50 but not dangerously so? and (b) what level to protect myself as well - a lower level and different treatment?

Given no financial cap. We would want to avoid too much risk of creating a situation where drug resistance could develop or damaging side effects developing long term?

Would stopping the treatment after 2 weeks be risky in any way? eg resistance to its further use.

The purpose at present is just to prepare for pregnancy. Thereafter we are advised to keep the load below 5000 if possible, although the present 7000 is not considered too risky.

I hope my questions are clear.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I would not stop the HIV medications.
