slight increase in viral load
May 11, 2008
Hi,
I had an undetectable viral load (less than 50 copies using the 2nd PCR)for 7 years. I have been on Trizivir all that time, which I started as soon as my vl went to 10,000. My CD4s have been going up, and now they are between 1100 and 1200.
My last quarterly vl test came back at 135. I repeated it, and it is 55.
Are these results statistically significant? My doctor recommends that I repeate the test in a month, and think of switching my med regime (as Trizivir is known to have a higher failure rate).
Thanks much for spending your time answering our questions! You folks are providing a great public service.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Those two viral load results are not significantly different. They both could represent blipping associated with assay variability and not treatment failure. That said, I agree with your doctor about this regimen and switching may be the best way to go.
