NUMBERS UP AND DOWN
Apr 26, 2008

First off, thank you for this amazing website. I was diagnosed with HIV in 2/08. Total shock, believe me. My initial bloodwork came back with CD4s at 467, 15%, and 83,000 vl. My doc did not suggest meds right away. We did a ton of other lab work and all my readings are good and no drug class resistance. My second batch of lab work (mid March) was confusing. My CD4s dropped to 317, but I increased to 17% and my vl went down to 63,000. I was getting over a cold, within a week or so of getting the 2nd batch of labs. My doc wants me to repeat the lab work in early May. At that point, she will may start meds. She is suggesting Atripla. Should we have started meds right away or am I okay waiting. I don't want to get lab work back again and fall below 200 or something. Advice?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Your numbers could have been affected by the cold. There is really no difference between those two viral load tests. I agree with your doctor's recommendation to start HIV treatment. It is OK to wait until May.
