cd4 180...and viral load at 12,000
Apr 26, 2008

my cd4 count is 180 and my viral load is 12,000 i was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. and i wanted to understand this more and know if i will die or if its bad..my doctor said that when someone is diagnosed and has no medications the cd4 count will always jump up and down until mediacation starts. so if my viral load is 12,000 is there a chance it will reach a million?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Unlikely that your viral load will shoot up like that. Your CD4 count is moderately low. Any CD4 count < 200 gives one an AIDS diagnosis. This means you are at great risk for developing serious opportunistic infections. HIV treatment is recommended now. Once your viral load is controlled (becomes undetectable) your CD4 count will more than double and get you out of the danger zone.
