Does positive toxo test mean diagnosis of AIDS?
Apr 26, 2008

I know that toxoplasmosis is listed as one of the 'AIDS defining illnesses'. I am healthy and have no symptoms, but my Dr. suggested that I get tested for toxoplasmosis as a routine test. She said that the blood test can determine if I've ever had toxoplasmosis before (something about IGG or IGM). My question is, would a positive result for the indication of previous toxo infection qualify as an AIDS defining illness? If so, would this change my diagnosis from HIV+ to AIDS?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

The positive toxo antibody test indicates past exposure and not necessarily active infection. If your CD4 count is > 200 then regardless of whether your toxo antibody test is positive you don't have AIDS.
