Misdiagnosis or real result
Sep 26, 2009

My best friend and partner was recently diagnosed with HIV. His initial screening was positive and the next test was returned indeterminate. A more extensive test was done and we were told his viral load is 1,020,000mL and his CD-4 is 239. He had the tests due to an extended low grade fever and aches. The Dr. seems to think that he has had HIV for a long time, but he had a "Quick" test done in April and it was negative. I had the "Quick" test performed in February and was negative as well. I just received my labs(which were taken 3 weeks after his diagnosis) and everything was TOTALLY negative. We had NOT been practicing safe sex until his labs returned positive. Could his result be caused by another infection or something that may skew the results? It seems that if his viral load was that high and CD-4 low I would also have been diagnosed HIV positive. Any insight you can give me would be appreciated.

From your history, he is HIV infected and you are not. If there was a negative test 6 months ago, then this likely represents acute/early infection, as the viral load is quite high, and the CD4 count can be significantly, and transiently decreased like that with acute infection.
