Recommended Vaccines for newly diagnosed HIV
Mar 1, 2009
Hello Dr. Holodniy,
I'm still unclear as to the recommended vaccinations for newly diagnosed individuals with HIV who do not yet need to go on treatment.
Pneumovax -- recommended by all every 5 years?
HPV for men -- recommended only by some (against anal cancer in the future)?
I had already been immunized for Hepatitis A and B. Should this be repeated in the future?
Any other recommended vaccinations? Can any of them do any harm?
Thank you very much.

Response from Dr. Holodniy
I think your comments on the recommendations are correct. I would add tetanus (every 10 years), influenza (yearly). Assuming you have had all the childhood vaccinations, they should not be repeated, as many are live vaccines and those have relative contraindications in HIV infected people depending on CD4 counts and other medical conditions. There are other vaccinations that could be administered if travel to endemic areas is being considered. Otherwise you wouldn't give them.
