Any possibility of a cure in 5 years? part 2
Jan 11, 2009
Thanks for your answer. I think that controlling the virus only is not substainable in the long term. If the drugs remain so expensive the balloon of costs will explode. There are 40 milion (known) infected worldwide. In 2020 this number will double. Imagine any of this folks would receive (hopefully) the medicines, who will cover the costs? I can't imagine the annual amount of money spent for 40 milion people. My impression is that the efforts for a cure are lower than before because we have HAART. This is an mistaken concept. We can't accept HAART anymore and more potent and destructive drugs are needed to at least stop treatment for several months. Just my opinion.

One positive note though from the outgoing US administration is the PEPFAR initiative, which has provided billions of $$ to fund HIV treatment and care in the developing world. In addition, several companies around the world have received approval to manufacture and distribute generic HIV drugs in the developing world reducing the cost to treat one patient very significantly.
