CMV Incidence
Nov 23, 2001

What is the incidence of CMV in the general i.e., non immunocompromised population Is CMV as contagious as say herpes ? Where can I find out more about CMV and its occurance and impact ?

Response from Dr. Feinberg

CMV is a relatively common infection which, for the most part, rarely causes severe enough symptoms to lead to a diagnosis as the time it is acquired. It is extremely commmon in childcare settings, where it is easy for small children and childcare workers to pass the virus to others. It belongs in the herpesvirus family and is about as contagious as herpes simplex. You can begin with any gebneral medical or infectious diseases textbook for more detailed information, and then use the references you find there t6o track down information of particular interest to you.
