| How early? Sep 18, 2001 How early in HIV infection is it that one might see a patient having problem yeast infection? What defines the type of yeast infection that might be indicative of early HIV infection ? |

Response from Dr. Feinberg
HIV+ people usually do not get yeast infections (oral or vaginal candidiasis/thrush) until they have less than 500 CD4 cells, especially less than 350 cells. In women, vaginal thrush seems to appear earlier than oral thrush. Once someone has gotten esphageal candidiasis, which is a more serious infection, that is indicative of AIDS and usually occurs when CD4 cells are less than 200. |
