HTLV
Mar 1, 2000

Hi Doc

What is HTLV infection, what are its symptoms, consequences and the tests required to diagnose it. Since everybody says that it is related to HIV virus, does the same tests show its presence also.

Response from Dr. Feinberg

The standard test for HIV-1 & 2 does not detect HTLV 1 or 2. HTLV 1 and 2 are distantly related to HIV and are uncommon in the US. They typically cause a very different range of associated problems than HIV does, such as T cell leukemia/lymphoma and tropical spastic paresis.
